दक्षिणामूर्ति को समझने के लिए हमारे पास तीन साहित्यिक आधार उपलब्ध है :
1) दक्षिणामूर्ति उपनिषद
2) दक्षिणामूर्ति की आरती
3) आदि शंकराचार्य विरचित दक्षिणामूर्ति स्तोत्र। इनका वर्गीकरण इस प्रकार किया जा सकता है।

(1) दक्षिणामूर्ति उपनिषद् अर्थात उपासना कांड जिसे हम आणवोपाय भी कह सकते हैं।
(2) दक्षिणामूर्ति की आरती अर्थात साधन काण्ड, जिसे शाक्तोपाय भी कहा जा सकता है।
(3) दक्षिणामूर्ति स्तोत्र अर्थात ज्ञान-काण्ड, यही शाम्भवोपाय है। इन तीनों पर सूक्ष्म विचार करने से विषय को बहुत समझा जा सकता है।

‘‘ सबसे पहले समझने की बात यह है कि, दक्षिणा का अर्थ है? दक्षिणामूर्ति उपनिषद् में दक्षिणा का अर्थ इस प्रकार दिया गया है कि, तत्व-ज्ञान-रूपिणी तथा ब्रह्म प्रकाशक बृद्वि ही दक्षिणा है तथा वही परम तत्व के अभीक्षण अर्थात साक्षात्कार में मुख अर्थात द्वार है। बह्मवादी इसे दक्षिणामुख शिव कहते हैं।

इसका यह अर्थ हुआ कि, दक्षिणामुख का संधिविच्छेद दक्षिण + आमुख नही, अपितु दक्षिणा + मुख है। प्रायः इसका अर्थ दक्षिणा मुख अर्थात दक्षिण अभिमुख किया जाता है, किन्तु उपनिषद् के अनुसार यह आत्मा की शक्ति ही है, क्योंकि बुद्वि भी शक्ति की एक क्रिया ही है जो आत्मा की बोधस्वरूपता (अथवा ज्ञप्ति) को चित्त पर प्रतिबिम्बित कर देती है।

वही शक्ति, बुद्वि के रूप में जगत् के ज्ञान का भी कारण है तथा आत्मज्ञान का मुख अर्थात द्वार भी। ईश्वर शक्ति-स्वरूप है इसलिए उसे ही दक्षिणामूर्ति कहा गया है। वही गुरू है, वही प्राप्तव्य है, तथा वही उसका साधन भी है।

युग पर युग तथा कल्प पर कल्प व्यतीत हो जाने पर भी दक्षिणामूर्ति रूपी चैतन्य गुरू में कोई परिवर्तन नहीं होता, वह नित्य युवा ही बना रहता है जबकि शिष्य (जीव) जिनकी स्थिति चित्त स्थापित है, वह जन्मते-मरते रहते हैं, कभी युवा, तो कभी वृद्ध हो जाते हैं। वहीं नित्य - गुरू, दक्षिणा रूप मे जड़ चित्त को चेतना प्रदान करता है। बृद्धि रूप में विकसित होता है।

स्वंय ही माया बनकर बृद्धि पर आच्छादित हो जाता है तथा स्वंय ही मौन उपदेश द्वारा बुद्धि को माया मुक्त करता है। उसका स्वभाव सदैव ही जगत के लिये कल्याण कारी है। वह इतना दयालु है कि, शिष्यों पर भी अपने आप को प्रकट कर देता है। जिस प्रकार चित्त को गुरू की चेतन शक्ति का दान मौन होता है, उसी प्रकार उसका ज्ञानोपदेश भी मौन ही है जो शिष्य में दिव्य मौन जाग्रत कर देता है, जैसा कि आरती में कहा गया है कि "दिव्य मौन उपदेश जगाता।"
